Soviet film director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, teacher. Born on May 21, 1906 in the village of Kundrava, Orenburg province (now a village in the Chelyabinsk region). In 1923-1925 he studied at the Leningrad Art School. In 1928 he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Performing Arts. In the cinema - since 1924. He made his debut as an actor in the film "Bears against Yudenich" (1925), in which he played the role of a spy. The first years of acting Gerasimov took place in the workshop "FEKS" (Factory of an eccentric actor). In the "FEKS" workshop Sergey Gerasimov went through the school of an eccentric actor. In his first roles, he showed himself as an actor of a predominantly grotesque plan, a master of sharp, graphically clear drawing of an image. In the future, without leaving completely acting work, Sergei Apollinarievich was mainly engaged in directing, in many of his films acting as a screenwriter. Despite the avant-garde spirit previously characteristic of Gerasimov, his directorial work was sustained in the spirit of socialist realism. Gerasimov's directorial debut was the film Twenty Two Misfortunes (1930, with S. Bartenev); then he directed the film The Heart of Solomon (1932, screenplay with M. Kresin), Do I Love You? (1934, screenwriter Gerasimov). A great place in the creative biography of Sergei Apollinarievich Gerasimov was occupied by pedagogical work, he directed the acting workshop at the Lenfilm film studio. In pedagogical practice for the education of film actors and in directorial work, Gerasimov, relying on the experience of realistic prose, is looking for his own paths in the art of cinema. During the Great Patriotic War, he took part in the creation of Combat Collection No. 1 (1941), directed the films The Invincible (1943, together with Mikhail Kalatozov) and Big Land (1944), which tell about the heroic struggle of Soviet people at the front and in the rear ... In 1944-1946 he headed the Central Documentary Film Studio. In 1944 he returned to pedagogical work, headed the joint director's and acting workshop at VGIK. Working with students, the director is becoming more and more affirmed in the idea of ??the closeness of the language of modern cinema to the language of realistic prose. Gerasimov with his students, in the form of a kind of film performance, staged the novel by Alexander Fadeev "Young Guard" (Theater-studio of the film actor). On the basis of this performance, in 1948, the film "Young Guard" was staged. In 1986, the name of S.A. Gerasimov was assigned to VGIK. People's Artist of the USSR (1948). Full member of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences (1978) Deputy of the USSR Armed Forces 3-4 convocations (1950-1958) Doctor of Arts (1967) Member of the Presidium of the Soviet Peace Committee (since 1950) Secretary of the Board of the USSR Investigative Committee Member of the JV USSR
He passed away on November 26, 1985 in Moscow, was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery of the capital (section 10, row 3).
