Alexander Rekhviashvili - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
Born January 17, 1938, Moscow
Director, screenwriter, actor, cameraman.
In 1962 he graduated from the camera department of VGIK (workshop of A. Galperin), the directing department of VGIK (1971, workshop of S. Gerasimov) .
As a cameraman he shot the films Allaverdoba (directed by G. Shengelaya) and Mikela (directed by E. Shengelaya), played a cameo role in the film Pirosmani (French, directed by G. Shengelaya).
By his first profession, Rekhviashvili is a cameraman. Maybe this is far-fetched, but the habit of seeing everything through the lens, fencing off from everything with the camera, can explain the parable of films. Little happens in them. In the first - the most educated in the village, the young man Niko does nothing but sign papers. In "The Way Home", the wanderings of the late disgraced, "supervised" philosopher, a young man, Antimos Iverieli, are recalled. A young scientist Alexi is looking for a job in "Steps". He doesn't find her. There is no hero in Approach. There, relatives share the house they inherited. Indeed, there may well be no hero in this world, since he is only a tool for expanding this or that space filled with things, "objects". All other characters are also "objects", each has only one function: an unreliable friend, unfaithful lover, fake neighbor, relative, fellow villager, dishonest enemy. The space can be wooded, mountainous, apartment, existing in the 7th century ("The Way Home") or 1990 ("Approach"), but it does well without individuality, it is essentially impersonal. Gorbachev's endless speech on an unplugged television identifies not so much Gorbachev as the endlessness of demagoguery. The real essence of space is dead things cluttering it, books or plants in tubs, or furniture, or brushwood. This is something that is viewed with interest.

All Rekhviashvili's films received "religious" prizes at festivals abroad (Catholic or ecumenical juries).
