April 23, 1891, Sontsovka estate, Bakhmutsky district, Yekaterinoslav province, Russian Empire (now the village of Krasnoe, Krasnoarmeysky district, Donetsk region, Ukraine) - March 5, 1953, Moscow, RSFSR, USSR - Russian and Soviet composer, conductor and pianist. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1947). Winner of the Lenin Prize (1957 - posthumously) and six Stalin Prizes (1943, 1946 - three times, 1947, 1951). One of the largest, most influential and most performed composers of the 20th century.
