Graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Leningrad State University (1954) with two specialties - philologist and journalist, Higher Courses for Film Directors at Lenfilm (1967, workshop of G.M. Kozintsev) .
After graduating from university he worked in a newspaper, until 1965 he worked as an editor, screenwriter, artist, author-operator of Leningrad television (published the television magazine "Young Leningrader", worked on television plays). At 32, he became the chief editor of literary and dramatic broadcasting. He worked in the BDT with Tovstonogov. Since 1967 - director of the Lenfilm film studio.
