Graduated from the Aviation Institute, then the directing department of VGIK (1949, workshop of S.A.Gerasimov). He made his film debut as a trainee director and actor in Gerasimov's film "Young Guard". Since 1950 he worked at the Gorky Film Studio. He directed his first film "A Case in the Taiga" in 1954. He became famous after the release of the film "They were the first", which tells about the first Komsomol members. He continued the theme of the younger generation in the film "Volunteers", the success of which was primarily associated with the acting ensemble (Mikhail Ulyanov, Elina Bystritskaya, Leonid Bykov, Pyotr Shcherbakov). One of the most significant works was the film "A Simple Story" about the life of an ordinary Russian peasant woman who, by the will of fate, became the chairman of a collective farm (her role was brilliantly played by Nonna Mordyukova). Films by Yu.P. Egorov has always been distinguished by high professionalism, talented acting work.
Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1965). People's Artist of the RSFSR (1974) .
He was buried in Moscow at the 37th section of the Vagankovsky cemetery.
