Graduated from Bucknell University in 1954. For three years he taught literature at the University of Chicago, reviewed films and television programs for the New Republic. First published a collection of stories and short stories "Goodbye Columbus" in 1959. He was awarded the National Book Prize for him. Roth's first novel, Spit, came out in 1962. Even more fame came after the publication in 1969 of the novel "The Tailor's Case". The best-selling novel Conspiracy Against America describes a country with a pro-fascist regime planted by pilot Charles Lindbergh, who defeated Roosevelt in the 1940 elections.
Philip Roth is a Pulitzer Prize laureate (1998), Franz Kafka Prize (2001) and PEN / Faulkner American Literary Prize (2007), awarded the US National Medal of Humanities (2010). In recognition of Roth's literary merits, the authorities of his hometown of Newark named one of the city squares after him.
In September 2013, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius solemnly presented the writer with the highest French award - the Order of the Legion of Honor.
From 1990 to 1995 he was married to British actress Claire Bloom.
