Ivan Ivanovich was born in the Russian Empire in the distant autumn of 1893 in Kharkov. Orphaned at the age of seven, he was placed in the care of a circus performer. For several years, the talented boy mastered the tricks of the circus art and even earned his "yard" performances. Then he worked in a professional circus.

Since 1914, Ivan Koval-Samborsky served in the Tsar's army. With the beginning of the revolution, he moved to Central Asia and joined the Red Army. He worked in theaters in Samarkand and Kostroma. In 1920 he moved to Petrograd, where he also worked in the theater. After some time, the tour brought him to Moscow, where he stayed. While working in the capital, he became interested in cinema. This interest turned out to be mutual. The filmmakers accepted the artist, and he became an iconic figure in Russian cinema.

The first film with Ivan Koval-Samborskiy - Enemies, where the beginning actor got the episodic role of a policeman. This was followed by the main roles in the films His Call, Miss Mend. He also took part in the film Mother, much later named one of the best films in the history of world cinema. He played both simple peasants and noble, noble characters.

In 1927 he went to Germany to exchange experience with foreign "filmmakers". He played at the Berlin Theater, starred in more than 10 films. In 1932 he returned to his homeland. During the war, he escaped from German captivity, after which he was exiled to Kyrgyzstan, where he worked up to the title of Honored Artist.

In 1955 he returned to Moscow. In 1956 he returned to the cinema, playing the "white" Colonel Selivanov in the film Poet. After the return, the roles of Ivan Koval-Samborsky were already less striking than at the beginning of his career, mostly episodic or secondary.

Died in 1962 at the age of 68.
