Soviet film director, screenwriter. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1974) .
In 1952 he graduated from the philological faculty of Lviv University, in 1959 - from the directing faculty of VGIK (workshop of Sergei Yutkevich).
In 1957-1958 - director of the Odessa Film Studio. Worked at the Belarusfilm cinema (1959-1965), the Gorky cinema (since 1965) .
He entered the history of Soviet science fiction thanks to the Moscow-Cassiopeia and Youths in the Universe dilogy, as well as the film Through Thorns to the Stars, which was far ahead of its time in terms of problems. Lacking modern technical and computer facilities, already in the 1970s, Richard Viktorov achieved in his films the absolute believability of scenes in space and weightlessness - even astronauts could not distinguish between screen weightlessness and real ones. The director seriously thought about the problems and dangers, the existence of which mankind realized only after 30 years: global warming, an ecological disaster due to the depletion of natural resources. Fantastic films by R.N. Viktorov's are still popular and enjoy well-deserved audience love. Films about the Great Patriotic War also occupy an important place in his work: "The Third Rocket" and "Obelisk", based on the stories of V.V. Bykov, show the inhumanity of any war. In the film "The Adolescent Age", the important theme is the memory of the war, the connection of generations. He died in the midst of filming the film "Comet", which was already finished by another director (Yuri Chulyukin). He was buried in the 65th section of the Mitinsky cemetery in Moscow.
