Born May 8, 1963 in Versailles, France. As a child, Michel dreamed of becoming an artist or inventor. In the 1980s, he attended an art school in Paris, where he developed his skills as a draftsman. There, Gondry met friends, with whom he founded the pop-rock group Oui Oui, which managed to record two albums and several singles before its disbandment in 1992. Gondri was the band's drummer and began his directing career by creating music videos for his band. The style of his music videos attracted the attention of Icelandic singer Bjork, who asked him to shoot a video for the song Human Behavior. Their collaboration continues to this day, with the result that Gondry created seven videos for Bjork. Other musicians who have worked with Gondry more than once include Daft Punk, Radiohead, The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers, American performer Beck. Along with David Fincher and Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry is named one of the brightest representatives of the wave of filmmakers who came to big-time cinema from the TV advertising and music video industries. Gondry's cinematic debut took place in 2001 with the release of the film Animal Nature, which received controversial criticism. However, his second film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004), created like the previous film in collaboration with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, received a lot of rave reviews. The leading roles in the film were played by Hollywood stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Eternal Sunshine uses many of the image manipulation techniques the director has experimented with in the past with his music videos. For the screenplay of this film, Gondry (together with Kaufmann and Pierre Bismuth) won an Oscar in 2005. The film also won the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film of the Year. Michel Gondry's favorite ideas and techniques are most fully reflected in his third feature film, Science of Sleep (2006). Dreams and reality are surprisingly mixed in this film about the love of two young people Stefan and Stephanie (played by Gael Garcia Bernal and Charlotte Gainsbourg). Filming took place entirely in France in late 2004 and early 2005, mainly in Paris, in the house where Gondry lived 15 years ago, and was conducted in three languages, French, English and Spanish. The animated episodes were created in the summer of 2004. The film premiered on January 22, 2006 at the Sundance Film Festival, where the film was very warmly received by both critics and audiences, followed by festival screenings in Berlin, Seattle and Moscow, which were held with constant success. 2007 saw the premiere of Michel Gondry's new film "Rewind" with Jack Black in the title role.
