Benjamin was born December 16, 1963 in San Francisco, the son of a nurse and metallurgist. His father is of English and German descent, the son of Broadway actor George Cleveland Bratt (English George Cleveland Bratt, 1893-1984). Mother - Peruvian Indian descent. She moved to the United States at the age of 14. Benjamin's parents were married on December 30, 1960, but divorced in 1967.
