In 1940 he was a member of the local literary circle at the Rybinskaya Pravda newspaper, and began writing stories.
Entered the Leningrad Mining Institute, from where he went to the front of the Great Patriotic War from the first year. Served as a senior pyrotechnician at the 1983 lead aircraft depot of the Southwestern Front. On May 8, 1942, during the Soviet offensive on Kharkov, at the Borovaya station, while destroying dangerous ammunition storage, he was seriously injured, as a result of which he lost his arms and injured his eye.
A literary circle was organized in a military hospital in Samarkand, in which Dick began to study. I had to write with a pencil between my teeth. At the end of 1942, the eye hospital, headed by academician Filatov, was transferred to Tashkent. After the end of treatment, he returned to Samarkand, where he met a tenth-grader, Larisa, who visited him according to the school curriculum at the hospital. They got married when Larisa graduated from high school. At the end of 1943, without exams, he was enrolled in the Literary Institute. After graduation, he entered the English department of the Institute of Foreign Languages.
In 1947 he made his debut with a collection of short stories "Goldfish". In 1949 he was admitted to the Writers' Union. He wrote a number of books, mainly for children: "Fiery Stream", "In our class", "In the wilds of Kara-Bumba", "In tow", "Blue fog", "Girls and boys", "Meeting with the father", “Green Lights”, “Third Eye”, “Iron Will”, “Goat in a Helicopter” and others.
