Melissa Leo was born to teacher Pega Leo and editor and fisherman Arnold Leo. She studied at New York State University, but did not graduate.
She played her first role in the television series All My Children in 1984-1985. In 1987, from actor John Heard, she had a son, John Matthew. Leo is best known for the series "Slaughter Department", where she played detective Kay Howard - the only woman in the original composition of the department.
