Gregory studied music intensively from childhood. In 1930 he graduated from the radio faculty of the Odessa Conservatory. In 1923-1929 he was an actor in Odessa theaters. He worked as the artistic director of radio broadcasting in the city of Yenakiyevo and director of a music school. In 1933-1945 he was a screenwriter and editor of the Odessa, Kiev and Tbilisi film studios. Since the beginning of the war, as the acting director of the Odessa Film Studio, he evacuated it to Tashkent. Then he worked at the Tbilisi Film Studio, periodically going to the front to shoot military newsreels. 1945-1947 - Artistic Director of the Odessa Theater of Miniatures.
Author of scripts for popular science and feature films, cartoons. For the script of the film "Forty-first" by Grigory Chukhrai, he won a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1957.
Honored Artist of the Tajik SSR (1980). Honored Artist of Ukraine (1995) .
According to Elena Grigorievna Koltunova, three times her father was deprived of honorary titles for his contribution to art because of his adherence to principles. So it was with the script for the film "People's Scientist" about Academician Lysenko, which has already been put into production. When the playwright accidentally overheard Lysenko's conversation with a subordinate colleague, in which he “revealed himself as a rude and cruel person,” he returned the studio's fee. He did the same in the case of the painting "Music Teacher" about the composer Nikolai Lysenko, in the credits of which someone else's surname was added next to Koltunov's name.
