Simon West began his cinematic career in 1981 as editor of the London office of the BBC. Over the four-year tenure, he has worked on many award-winning projects, including the documentary series Strangeways Prison and the drama series Bleak House. Both works have received awards from the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts. His career began in 1985 when he began freelancing as a filmmaker and received notice from the Arts Council of Great Britain that he was approved to write and direct the film Dolly Mixtures. Subsequently, Simon West signed a contract with a subsidiary of "Mercury Records", London-based label "Limelight Records", and became the director of several video clips and commercials. In 1987 West won the Best Video nomination at the Montreux Music Festival as the creator of the video for the single "Respectable" by the popular music duo Mel and Kim. In the same year, Simon directed the video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" by musician Rick Astley.
Recognized as a successful commercial director, West moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to work at the Limelight office. In 1992 he began making experimental films. In addition, West's work on Airplane advertising for Little Caesars pizza and restaurant chain won the Clio Awards for Creative Achievement in Advertising and Design. Video "Italian Feast" for the same "Little Caesars" won the "Golden Lion" award .
In 1993, West joined Propaganda Films. Where he worked on advertising for companies with such well-known brands as McDonald's, Sprite, AT&T, Miller, Ford and Budweiser. ... The most famous commercial ad is one version of the Pepsi ad, in which a little boy sucks himself into a Pepsi bottle. This funny video was broadcast during the Super Bowl game for the title of the US National Football League champion and became the best commercial video of the year in the rating of the national American newspaper USA Today. Since 1997 he has been creating blockbuster films. Some of the most famous are "Prison in Air", "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider".
