Born in the Brooklyn area of ??New York in a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He served in the Marine Corps in Lebanon. Studied at the Acting Studio of Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. For about 10 years he worked in small theaters. At this time, he met the film director Martin Scorsese, with whom he starred in the film "Who is knocking at my door?" Collaboration with Scorsese continued in the films Alice Does Not Live Here (1974), Wicked Streets (1972), Taxi Driver (1976), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) .
In the late 1970s, he starred in European films. Keitel was supposed to play in Apocalypse Now (1979) by Francis Ford Coppola, but Martin Sheen got the role. After that, there was some decline in his career; mostly played supporting roles.
The comeback came in 1988, when Keitel played Judas Iscariot in Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ. He played one of the main roles in the film "The Piano" by Jane Campion, which won the Palme d'Or in Cannes. In 2001 he starred in the film Opinions of the Sides by Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Szabo.
In 2002 at the Moscow Film Festival he was awarded the Konstantin Stanislavsky Prize.
