The famous Serbian and Yugoslavian film director was born in the fall of 1954 in the city of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Emir Kusturica was born into a family of non-practicing Muslims, and the Emir himself converted to Orthodoxy in adulthood, when he learned that his ancient ancestors professed Orthodoxy, not Islam. Emir's father not only worked in the ministry, but was also one of the members of the Communist Party. The future film director decided to get higher education abroad, namely in Prague (then the capital of Czechoslovakia), at the Academy of Performing Arts. Feeling a craving for cinema, the young man, without hesitation, chose the Faculty of Film and Television, which Goran Paskalevich, Milos Forman and Jiri Menzel graduated from. The first student works of Kusturica, short films, were called Part of Truth and Autumn. and his thesis was a dramatic short film by Guernica, touching upon the problems of Nazism and anti-Semitism. Acting as a director, cameraman and screenwriter of his graduation film, Emir not only completed his studies with honors, but also won a prize at a competition in Karlovy Vary.
The first full-length films with the participation of Emir Kusturica are shown on television in his native Sarajevo, where the director returned after graduation. In 1981, the whole country learned about the director when his film Do You Remember Dolly Bell? appeared on the big screens and brought Kusturica several awards at film festivals. This was followed by films with Emir Kusturica as director and screenwriter, such as Underground, Black Cat, White Cat, Life as a Miracle and Covenant. Kusturica is an honorary recipient of as many as five awards at the Cannes Film Festival and several awards at the Venice Film Festival.
The legendary director is married to Maya Kusturica, with whom they raise their son Stribor and daughter Dunya.
