Was born on January 17, 1967 in Moscow. Father - animator Roman Abelevich Kachanov. Mother - Gara Alexandrovna Kachanova, an engineer-economist by education. Roman Romanovich Kachanov grew up in the Moscow district of Kuntsevo.
He began his career at the age of 15. He worked as a literary secretary (science fiction writer Kira Bulychev). In 1982-1984, as a free listener, he attended a course of lectures at the Higher Directing Courses.
In 1984 he entered the screenwriting faculty of VGIK (workshop of K. K. Paramonova and I. K. Kuznetsov). He studied in the same course with Renata Litvinova, and at the parallel, directing department, simultaneously with Roman Kachanov, Fyodor Bondarchuk, Ivan Okhlobystin, Tigran Keosayan, Alexander Bashirov, Rashid Nugmanov, Bakhtiyar Khudoinazarov and other figures of modern Russian cinema studied. Subsequently, with many of them, Roman Kachanov will continue the friendship and cooperation begun at the institute.
Graduated from VGIK in 1989. He was assigned to the Film Studio. Gorky in the association "Ladya" (artistic director Pavel Arsenov). In 1990 he left the association.
In 1990, as a production director, he began shooting the film Don't Ask Me Anything. The film was completed in 1991. However, due to economic difficulties in the country, the film was not released. The premiere took place only in 1994 at the Central House of Cinematographers. In January 1992 he began filming the movie "Freak". In 1993, he finished the painting.
In 1993, on March 17, Roman Kachanov's mother died - Gara Alexandrovna Kachanova. And on July 4, his father, Roman Abelevich Kachanov, died.
From 1993 to 1997 he shot commercials and a music video. In 1998 he shot the low-budget film "Maximilian".
In the same 1998 he married actress Anna Buklovskaya. On November 3, his daughter was born - Polina Kachanova. On December 19, 1999, his second daughter, Alexandra Kachanova, was born. In 1999 he began filming, and in 2000 completed the production of the film "DMB", which received wide recognition from both film critics and the public.
