William Pratt became widely known to the general public as Boris Karloff after the horror film Frankenstein (1931), in which the actor played the main role of the Beast, was released. He became a legend during his lifetime, he was called the Master of Terror, then Karloff the Terrible, but what is the truth behind his harsh gait?
William was born in the fall of 1887 in the capital of Great Britain. He had nine older sisters and brothers, in his youth he changed many schools, but his commitment to cricket and theater remained constant. Although William initially planned to build a serious diplomatic career after his older brother John, the guy's fascination with the stage turned out to be stronger than the arguments of reason. Having dropped his studies at the university, Ulyam goes to seek his fortune in Canada, where he takes the pseudonym Boris Karloff, so as not to harm the political reputation of his relatives.
In North America, he tries to earn a living through hard physical labor, and whenever possible plays in small productions. There he also marries for the first time, but his marriage to actress Olivia Wilton was unsuccessful and, accordingly, short-lived.
In 1919, Karloff moved to Hollywood and began acting in films, more and more often as minor characters. For more than ten years, lived in the capital of cinema, films with Boris Karloff have crossed the 60 mark, but the actor himself remains unknown. Perhaps his star would never have been lit if in 1931 the young man had not been noticed by James Well, who was just looking for a leading actor for his future horror picture Frankenstein. Karloff turned out to be exactly the guy the director had been waiting for.
The exit of Frankenstein instantly raised the actor to Olympus of fame, he begins to act a lot, and most importantly - successfully, giving preference to the Frankenstein cycle and horror films in general, although there are other genre main roles of Boris Karloff - in detective stories and some dramas.
His most striking characters appeared in films such as The Lost Patrol (1934), The Mummy (1932), Isle of the Dead (1945) and The Raven (1963).
He was married six times, from the fifth marriage there was a daughter Sarah. Died in England at the age of 81.
