Born on April 15, 1941, Nerkin-Oratag, NKAO, Azerbaijan SSR - Soviet and Ukrainian film director, screenwriter and producer.

In early childhood, he lost his father, who went missing on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In 1959-1961 he was an actor in the Stepanakert Theater. In 1961-1964 he studied at the directing department of the Yerevan Theater Institute, then transferred to the directing department of the Kiev State Institute of Theater Arts named after I. Karpenko-Kary, from which he graduated in 1969.

He made his directorial debut in 1973 with the film The Romashkin Effect. In 1982 he shot the film "Flights in Dreams and in Reality", which was watched by six and a half million viewers, and subsequently awarded the USSR State Prize. Roman Balayan was also famous for his TV versions of the performances of the Moscow Sovremennik Theater "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1992), "Anfisa" (1993) and others. Gruvemuveend

In 2008 he was awarded the Order of Merit, second degree.

In 2016 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the first degree.
