Born on January 20, 1952 in Slavgorod, Altai Territory. In 1969-1970 he worked as an artist-designer at the Pavlodar Tractor Plant, then served in the army. In 1976 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute, in 1978-1982 he worked as a production designer at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio, participated in the creation of the films "Race with Pursuit", "Smoke of the Fatherland", "Cossack Outpost", "This is such music". In the decision of Vladimir Khotinenko to try himself in cinema, a big role was played by his meeting with Nikita Mikhalkov during his military service. Subsequently, Khotinenko worked for him as an assistant on the paintings "Oblomov", "Five Evenings", "Kinship". In 1981 he graduated from the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors. The debut of Vladimir Khotinenko as a director was the adventure film "Alone and Without a Weapon", shot by him in 1984 together with P. Farkhutdinov. With the film "Mirror for a Hero" (1987), Khotinenko clearly declared himself as a promising director, and subsequent works made him one of the leading Russian film masters. The films by Vladimir Khotinenko "Makarov" (1993) and "The Muslim" (1995), especially the second one, caused a great response from viewers and specialists. In 2001, the director began cooperation with television, acting as the director of four parts of the "revived" series "Connoisseurs lead the investigation." This cooperation was continued - in 2004, the historical series "Death of the Empire" (continuation of the series "Empire under attack"), shot by Khotinenko, appeared on the screens with the participation of leading actors of modern Russian cinema. The drama about the sinking of the submarine "72 meters" (2003), based on the story of the writer Alexander Pokrovsky, had the greatest resonance among the works of late. As an actor starred in the films "Cossack Outpost" (1982, directed by Victor Zhivolub), "Who is the singer married to?" (1988, dir. Oleg Nikolaevsky), "The plane flies to Russia" (1994, dir. Alexey Kapilevich). He was a screenwriter and producer of several of his films. He teaches at VGIK (head of the feature film directing workshop), since 1999 he has been conducting a director's and scriptwriting workshop at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors (together with Pavel Finn). He was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (2001). People's Artist of the Russian Federation (2010).
