Was born on December 28, 1957 in Cheboksary.
Studied at an art school. In 1980 he graduated from the directing department of VGIK, where he studied in the workshop of Lev Kulidzhanov and Tatyana Lioznova.
In 1979 he staged Brecht's play "Mother Courage and Her Children" as a graduation performance in the acting workshop. The film "Cord" became Khvan's diploma cinematic work. The director gained fame in 1992, when he shot the film Duba-Duba with Oleg Menshikov in the title role.
Duba-Duba was awarded the Film Press prize for the best debut and successfully participated in several film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the director himself wrote the music for this film.
Since 1996 - Member of the Board of the Gorky Film Studio. Secretary of the Board of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia.
