The director's first success in children's cinema was the fabulous film Finist - the Clear Falcon, staged in 1976, which won an award at the Gijon International Film Festival. Heroes of epics and fairy tales have repeatedly appeared in his films - "Vasily Buslaev" (1982), "Black Prince Adjuba" (1988), but, perhaps, the characters of the comedy-adventure film "New Adventures" became no less beloved and popular among the young audience. In 1985, Vasiliev first turned to the genre of historical film, filming Valentin Ivanov's novel "Primordial Rus", and in 1991 another of his films on the theme of Russian history, "Tsar Ivan the Terrible", was released.

He died at the age of 60 from a cerebral hemorrhage.
