Sam Riley is an English actor and singer best known for his role as Ian Curtis in Control, the lead singer of the 1970s post-punk band Joy Division. This role earned him the British Independent Film Awards in the category "Most Promising Debut", as well as many nominations for other prestigious film awards
Riley was born in Leeds and attended Uppingham School in Rutland from 1993 to 1998. For several years he was the lead singer of one of Leeds' 10,000 Things group, with which he achieved little success.
In September 2007, Riley auditioned for a role in the film Franklin by Gerald McMarrow. In the film Thirteen, an autoremake of the French thriller of the same name, he plays the main role - a character named Vince. He also starred in Brighton Rock, opposite Helen Mirren and Carey Mulligan.
Currently he lives in Berlin with his wife Alexandra-Maria Lara, who also starred in the film Control. They have been married since 2009.
In 2008 he took part in an advertising campaign for the British haute couture house Burberry, becoming the "face" of the famous brand.
