Born on July 13 (01), 1887 in Odessa, in the family of a merchant of the 2nd guild. After the publication of Babel's stories in "LEF", the writer becomes famous. The first collections of the writer ("Cavalry", 1926; "Jewish stories", 1927) are translated into more than 20 languages ??of the peoples of the world. In 1926 he wrote the play "Sunset", based on which performances were staged in several theaters, including the 2nd Moscow Art Theater. In 1936 he worked with Eisenstein on the second version of the film script "Bezhin Meadow", radically altering the text of A.G. Rzheshevsky. In 1939 he was arrested, and the writer's manuscripts were confiscated. On January 27, 1940, he was shot by court order.
