James Tolkan was born June 20, 1931 in Calumet, Michigan. Father Ralph (was a cattle dealer), mother Marjorie. Studied at the University of Iowa, Coe College and Eastern Arizona College. He served for a year in the US Navy, after which he graduated from the Actors Studio in New York.
First appeared on screen in 1960 in the TV series Naked City. His most famous role is the headmaster, Mr. Strickland in Robert Zemeckis's Back to the Future (1985). He also starred in films such as Love and Death (1975), Prince of the City (1981), War Games (1983), Best Shooter (1986), Masters of the Universe (1987), Dick Tracy "(1990) and the series" The Secrets of Nero Wolfe "(2001-2002).
