In 2013, the actor was married to Wen-Ju Chuang.
Chen made his big screen debut at a young age, getting a role alongside his father in the movie "A Bright Summer Day," where they played father and son. One of his first roles as an adult actor was in Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a martial arts adventure film. The main roles in this picture were played by Chou Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Another film, 2005's Three Times, in which he played Chen, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. And in 2008, Chen reprized his role in the internationally acclaimed film The Battle of Red Rock, directed by John Woo. After that he starred in such films as "The Great Master", "Brotherhood of Blades" and "Brotherhood of Blades 2". In 2015, the actor played the military governor Tian Jian. whom the righteous killer Ni (Shu Qi) is supposed to take his life on assignment in the dramatic action movie "The Assassin".
