Farrell was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York, where she began performing on the small stage before making her Broadway debut. She made her debut on the big screen in 1981 with a small role in the comedy "So Cool", and then went on to appear in the films "Watch Out, Lady!", "Wonderful School Years", "Mighty Quinn" and "The Exorcist 3." On television, Farrell has appeared in Hill Street Blues, The Twilight Zone and Quantum Leap, and also had a minor role in Thirty-Something. In 1990, she was a regular on the short-lived CBS sitcom Valerie Harper's City.
In 1991, Farrell played supporting roles in Boys Next Door and Tropical Fever. The following year, she starred with Wesley Snipes in the comedy White Men Can't Jump, and has since had minor roles in Equinox, Poetic Justice, and Top Score. In 1993, she co-starred with Mayor Winningham in the Lifetime television movie Better to Die. The following year, Farrell had a supporting role in the first season of the NBC series Ambulance, and in 1996-97 she starred with Corbin Bernsen in the syndicated sci-fi series The Cape.
In the 2000s, Farrell appeared on the screens only a few times. In 2000, she had a supporting role in the HBO miniseries "The Angle," with Handi Alexander, and then guest roles in "Food for Soul," "The Shield," and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In 2004, she was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for her role in the ABC television movie Flight 323: Crash, and next time, ten years later, she starred in Tasha Smith's directorial debut, In a Box. Farrell then landed a supporting role in the second season of Fox's prime-time soap opera Empire.
