Born June 17, 1960 in El Paso, Texas, USA, the son of a medical officer and a housewife, was the third of six children. At birth, he received the name Thomas Richard McMillen, was brought up under the surname of his stepfather - Quesada, which he later changed to Haden Church. According to Thomas, both the surnames Hayden and Church are present in the family tree.
He grew up in Laredo, Texas and graduated from Harlingen High School in Harlingen, Texas in 1979, before going to the University of North Texas.
