Queen Latifah (born March 18, 1970, nee Dana Elaine Owens) is an American singer, rapper, actress and model, winner of the Grammy and Golden Globe, as well as nominee for Emmy and Oscar ...
Dana Elaine Owens was born in Newark on March 18, 1970 in the family of a teacher and a police officer, who divorced 10 years after her birth. Her pseudonym Latifa appeared when she was still eight years old, and in translation from Arabic it means "gentle", "soft". Latifa was a big girl from childhood and during her school years she was a forward in the local basketball team.
Latifa's musical career began after graduation, when she began performing as a beatboxer in the rap group Ladies Fresh. In 1988, DJ Mark the 45 King heard Latifa's only recording, the song "Princess of the Posse," and introduced it to Fred Brathwaite, host of Yo! MTV Raps ". Fred helped a lot in the further development of her career, and a year later at the studio "Tommy Boy Records" Latifa recorded her first album "All Hail the Queen". In the next four years she released two more albums, the last of which, "Black Reign", released in 1993, was certified gold. Latifa won the Grammy Award in 1995 for her album UNITY, recorded in the jazz-rap style. In total, Latifa has been nominated six more times for the most coveted music award.
Latifa recorded her last album entirely in the style of rap and hip-hop "Order in the Court" in 1998, after which jazz and soul were added to these styles in her next albums. Latifa's all-jazz album, which went gold again, was released in 2004 and was called The Dana Owens Album. In July 2007, Latifa performed at the famous Hollywood Cup concert hall during a jazz concert, and after a while, her next jazz album Trav'lin 'Light was released.
Her latest album "Persona" once again recalls Latifa's musical beginnings, and contains compositions in the style of R&B and hip-hop. In its first week of release, it immediately hit # 25 on the Billboard 200 list.
