Born November 19, 1958 in New York City and raised on the East Coast. He spent the first years of his life in Long Island, attending school in West Hurtford, Connecticut, where his family moved in 1972. After graduating from high school in 1976, Charlie first entered Boston University, but soon moved to New York, where he began to study film. Here he shot a couple of short films, and participated in student productions as an actor. But after graduation, Kaufman moved to Minneapolis, where he worked for a newspaper and a local art museum. In 1990, Charlie went to Los Angeles hoping to pursue a career as a screenwriter. He started working in television, wrote scripts for several episodes of comedy series.
His first feature-length screenplay, To Be John Malkovich, was nominated for an Oscar. The second nomination, for "Adaptation," Kaufman shared with his fictional brother Donald, who became the first non-existent person to qualify for an Academy Award.
Kaufman has made two films each with directors who started their careers by making video clips: Spike Jonzee (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) and Michel Gondry (Beastly Nature, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). In addition, he wrote the screenplay for George Clooney's debut film Confessions of a Dangerous Man. Kaufman also took part in the adaptation of Philip Dick's The Blur, but his version did not pass.
In 2008, Kaufman shot his first film "New York, New York" according to his own script, characterized by an extremely pessimistic tone, which did not pay off at the box office, but was recognized by R. Ebert as the best film of the decade.
