Vicente was the youngest son of a republican-minded Barcelona family. In 1952, for political reasons, Aranda emigrated to Venezuela, where he worked as a technician for an American shipping company. In 1959 he returned to Spain and tried to enter the Madrid school of cinematography, but was refused, as he did not have a complete secondary education. Aranda moved to Barcelona, ??where the self-taught director made his first film in 1964.
