E. S. Matveev was born on March 8, 1922 in the village of Novoukrainka (now in the Skadovsky district of the Kherson region of Ukraine). Parents - Semyon Kalinovich Matveev and Nadezhda Fedorovna Kovalenko. Evgeny Matveev began from an early age to become involved in the difficult peasant labor. Eugene studied well and his parents were advised to take the boy to the city, where he could get a good education.
