Born June 21, 1961, Paris, France - musician of Spanish (Galician and Basque) descent. He is known as a solo musician and as the leader of the Mano Negra group. His music can be described as a fusion of rock and Latin American music. Lyrics by Manu Chao in French, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese and English. Manu Chao was born in Paris to a family of Spaniards who immigrated to France in hiding from the Franco dictatorship. His father is the renowned journalist and writer Ramon Chao. Manu Chao grew up in Paris and lives in Brazil, Marseille and Barcelona. From 1987 to 1995 he was the leader of the musical group "Mano Negra", founded by Manu and his brother Antoine. Prior to that, he participated in the group "Le Hots Pants". Mano Negra's lyrics were often political. In 1995, Manu disbanded the group and began activities under his own name, accompanied by the band "Radio Bemba Sound System". Commercial success in Europe and North America came with the release of the single "Bongo Bong" (1998). The platinum albums "Clandestino" and "Proxima Estacion: Esperanza" are about the political and social problems of developing countries, but also about life and love in general. Among the awards for Manu Chao: Best French Performer 2001 at the MTV Europe Music Awards and Goya for Best Song (2006, song Me llaman Calle for the film Princesses). He is also the composer for the film Maradona (2008) by Emir Kusturica.
