Levon Helm (eng. Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm ^; May 26, 1940, Elaine ^ [en ^], Arkansas - April 19, 2012, New York) - American musician from The Band and actor ("Miner's Daughter") ... Grammy award winner for his solo albums (2007, 2010, 2012).
Born May 26, 1940 in Elaine, Arkansas, USA.
In 1960, he began playing in the band accompanying rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins. It included Canadian musicians Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson - all future members of The Band.
Also performed with Bob Dylan (1960-70s) and other musicians, participated in the recording of Ringo Starr's album Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band (in 1989).
Levon Helm's 2007 solo album Dirt Farmer won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in February 2008, and in November of the same year, Rolling Stone magazine named him one of the best singers in the world at # 91 on their list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2010, his next album, Electric Dirt (2009), won a Grammy for the new Best American Album nomination. In 2011, his live album Ramble at the Ryman was nominated for a Grammy in the same category and eventually won it.
Died April 19, 2012 of cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
