One of America's most famous female directors in the 1980s.
Graduated from Abington High School and continued her studies at Drexel University, her native Philadelphia, where she studied fashion and art.
Made her first film at New York University's Film School, Smithereens was recognized at film festivals and won the Academy Award in 1994 (screenplay by Ron Niswaner). Then a successful film was shot with Madonna in the title role and several more less budget films. The director was a resounding success with the 1998 series Sex and the City.
