Benicio Del Toro was born on February 19, 1967 in the city of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, in the family of lawyer Gustavo Adolfo del Toro Bermundes and his wife Fausta Sanchez Rivera. The actor has a brother named Gustavo, he is two years older than him, and he is currently working as a pediatric oncologist in Manhattan. In 1980, his mother died of hepatitis, and his father sent his son to relatives in the United States, in the small town of Mercerburg in Pennsylvania, where Benicio was assigned to a local boarding school. After high school, Del Toro entered the University of California at San Diego, but soon left him, becoming interested in theater. Then he went to New York and entered the Circle In The Square School of Dramatic Art, but his studies there for some reason did not work out, and Benicio left for Los Angeles, where for three years he took lessons from the famous theater teachers Stella Adler and Arturo Mendoza.
During his studies, del Toro made his television debut, receiving in 1987 a small role in an episode of the popular television series Miami Police, and a year later he first appeared in a movie in the comedy Shorty is a Big Shot. In 1989, the actor was offered to take part in a new film about the adventures of James Bond - "License to Kill", and as a result, Del Toro became the youngest villain in Bond. In 1991, there was a small role in Sean Penn's directorial debut, the drama The Fugitive Indian, and then supporting roles in the films Free Money, Fearless, China Moon and Among the Sharks. An important stage in Benicio's career was his participation in the 1995 crime thriller "Suspicious Persons", for his participation in which the critics awarded the actor the "Independent Spirit" award. The following year, he was again awarded this prize - this time for the film "Basquiat". In 1996, the actor appeared in three more films. These were the drama American Theft, the crime drama The Funeral, in which the actor played the gangster Gaspar, and the thriller by Tony Scott, The Fan, in which del Toro's partners were Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes. In 1997, actress Alicia Silverstone invited Benicio to star in the romantic comedy Excess Baggage, which she herself produced. The film failed at the box office, but critics responded positively to the actor's work. Then, in 1998, Del Toro, along with Johnny Depp, starred in the film adaptation of the famous novel by Hunter Thompson - the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - and the role of Dr. Gonzo became a real breakthrough for the actor. For the sake of participating in the project, the actor gained about twenty kilograms, but in the end, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", directed by Terry Gilliam, became one of the cult films of the 90s. In 2000, after a two-year hiatus, the actor starred in three significant films at once. The first was the thriller The Way of Arms, the directorial debut of screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, followed by the crime drama Traffic by Stephen Soderbergh. This film, whose plot was based on the problem of drug trafficking, won four Oscars - and one of them went to Del Toro. In addition, for the role of police officer Javier Rodriguez, the actor was awarded a total of nineteen prestigious awards and nominations, including the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Berlin Film Festival awards. And, finally, the third film of the actor this year was the famous gangster comedy by Guy Ritchie "Big Jackpot" .
The next notable appearance of the actor on the movie screen was his participation in the film of his old friend Sean Penn "The Promise". In 2003, he co-starred with Tommy Lee Jones in the thriller Hunted and the drama 21 Grams, and for his role in the last film, which also starred Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, he won the Venice Film Festival plus Oscar nominations and BAFTA award. 2005 was no less successful year for Del Toro - along with Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba and other famous actors, he took part in the black and white thriller Sin City, a brilliant stylized adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novels. In 2007, del Toro, together with Halle Berry, took part in the filming of the drama What We Lost, and in 2008 he starred in the film Che, Steven Soderbergh's biopic about the legendary Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, where the actor played the main role.
