The future director's mother, Karin Luberg (1907–2000), was a writer, and his maternal grandfather Ernst Luberg was the Swedish finance minister in the first cabinet of Carl Gustav Ekman (1926–1928) and leader of the Swedish Liberal Party (1930–1933). His father was a dentist as well as a filmmaker who filmed family videos on 8mm film. The son took over his father's hobby.
At first, Hallstrom honed his skills by creating music videos, in particular for the ABBA group.
International success came to him after the 1985 film "Mitt liv som hund". From that moment on, Lasse switched to the American market. His 1999 work "Winemaking Rules" was nominated seven times for an Oscar. The film won an Academy Award in two nominations.
Hallstrom has two children: Johan (born 1976) from his first marriage to Malu Hallstrom (d. February 3, 2005) and Tura (born 1995) from actress Lena Ulin, his second wife.
