Juraj Yakubisko - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
Born April 30, 1938.
Graduated from the School of Art and Industry with a degree in art photography in Bratislava, the directing and cinematography department of the Film and Television Department of the Academy of Musical Art in Prague. He was an assistant with Vera Khitilova and Yaromil Iresh.
Jakubisko's first films made him one of the leading directors of the "Czechoslovak New Wave" .
The 1969 painting "Birds, Orphans and Mad Men" was sent to the "shelf", where it remained until 1991. The director himself was virtually deprived of the opportunity to film for the next fifteen years. The exceptions were a few short documentaries and the film Three Sacks of Cement and a Live Rooster (1976), but it was only shown two years after it was finished. He finally returned to the cinema with the film "Build a House, Plant a Tree" (1979) .
In many of his films ("I am sitting on a branch and I feel good", "Better to be healthy and rich than poor and sick", "Bathory", etc.) he turned to different periods of the history of the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia.
In 2000, according to a survey of film critics and journalists, he was recognized as the best Slovak director of the 20th century. Teaches at the Prague Film Academy. In 2005 he headed the jury of the Perspectives competition at the XXVII Moscow Film Festival. He founded the studio "Yakubisko Film", where he shot a number of his paintings.
He is engaged in painting, his works have been presented at several exhibitions. He is married to actress Deana Horvatova, whom he shot a lot in his films. Lives in Prague.
