Jean-Marc Barr was born on September 27, 1960 in the German city of Bitburg. He grew up in an international family: his mother is French, and his father is an American pilot who took part in World War II. He received his liberal arts education at the University of California, the Sorbonne and the drama department of the Paris Conservatory. After moving to London, he continued his education at the famous Guildhall School of Music and Theater. A strong fascination with Shakespeare changed the circle of his inclinations and occupations. Barr has worked in theater and cinema since the 1980s. In 1986 Jean-Marc moved to France, where he began acting in the theater. In addition, he is involved in several television and film projects, but without much success. He became a star only after starring in Luc Besson's film "Blue Abyss" (nominated for the 1989 Cesar Award in the category "Best Actor"). In the same year, Barr took part in the London theatrical production of Tennessee Williams "Orpheus Descends to Hell", starring opposite Vanessa Redgrave.
The strongest influence on the formation of Barr's creative personality was his long-term collaboration with Lars von Trier ("Europe", 1991, "Breaking the waves", 1996, "Dancing in the dark", 2000). Along with his regular co-author Pascal Arnold Barr, inspired by von Trier's "Dogma-95" manifesto, he decided to follow her postulates. Soon his directorial debut took place. Instead of the originally intended one film, Barr and Arnold shoot an entire trilogy, called "The Trilogy of Freedom." They try to delineate the territory of freedom in three dimensions: love (Lovers, 1999), sex (Too Much Flesh, 2000), spirit (Enlightenment, 2001). The project was supported by the first commercial French TV channel TF1 and became a high-profile cultural event in European intellectual circles. The actor also starred in Blur's video for "Charmless Man".
