Derek Richardson Jr. was born in Queensbury, New York, the eldest of five children of M.D. Derek Richardson and his wife, Ellen. He attended Holderness School (New Hampshire) and later entered Colorado College (1994-98). He began his acting career with guest roles in Law & Order and Strangers with Candy. After moving to Los Angeles in 2002, he was cast for a recurring role in J.J. Abrams' Felicity as Keri Russell's lover. He subsequently starred in the prequel to the Dumb and Dumber franchise, Dumb and Dumber: When Harry Met Lloyd, as a young Jeff Daniels character, Harry Dunn.
Richardson co-stars with Jay Hernandez as one of the main characters in the horror film Lionsgate Studios Hostel, directed by Eli Roth and as executive producer Quentin Tarantino. His participation in this horror film earned him the 2006 MTV Film Award for Best Fright MTV Movie Award.
In the same year, he began acting in the television show Men in the Trees as Patrick the Bachelor.
In 2012-2014 he played Nolan Johnson - in all 100 episodes of the sitcom Charlie Sheen Anger Management.
