Real name and surname - Lazar (Leizer) Iosifovich Weisbein.
He studied at a commercial school in Odessa, but did not finish it. From 1909 he worked in a traveling circus, learned to play the violin. In 1912 he entered the Kremenchug Theater of Miniatures, at the same time he took the stage name Utesov. In 1917 he won first place at the Gomel competition of coupletists and in the same year organized a small orchestra in Moscow, with which he performed in the Hermitage garden. In 1919, he first appeared in a movie in the film "Lieutenant Schmidt Freedom Fighter" .
On March 8, 1929, Leonid Utyosov's dramatized jazz debuted in Leningrad with the Tea Jazz program. It was a completely new genre for the stage of that period. Utesov combined conducting with entertainments, dancing, singing, playing the violin, and reading poetry. The musicians acted out various scenes between themselves and the conductor. Since 1936, Edith Utesova (the singer's daughter) has taken part in the performances of the orchestra. In 1937, the Utesov jazz orchestra presented a new program "Songs of my Motherland". The program ran for several years, until 1941.
In 1939, his first book, Notes of an Actor, was published. In the same year he played, sang and conducted the orchestra in the Steamboat film concert, which is rightfully considered the prototype of modern video clips. During the war years, Leonid Utyosov traveled to the front many times and spoke to the soldiers. Repeatedly during such trips, he found himself in dangerous situations, under bombing. The 5th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was presented with two La-5F aircraft from the orchestra of Leonid Utyosov. The planes were called "Funny guys" .
On May 9, 1945, with a huge crowd of people, Utyosov performed with the orchestra on an open stage on Sverdlov Square in Moscow. For the 800th anniversary of Moscow (1947), the Utyosov Orchestra prepared the orchestral fantasy "Moscow". At the end of the program, Dunaevsky's song “My dear Muscovites!” Sounded for the first time.
