In early 1986, after six months of work at the school, being already quite popular among local musicians, he received an invitation to join the Dzerzhinsk group "GPD" (Extended Day Group). The style of music is hard rock.

In March 1988, at the 3rd (or second) Gorky Rock Festival, he unexpectedly met the band of the same name from Kharkov, which he was described in absentia as "punks".

In 1989 he graduated from LGIK and in the same summer moved from Dzerzhinsk to Kharkov, where he joined the Kharkov "GPA".

Upon arrival in Kharkiv, Chigrakov joins Alexander Chernetsky, Pavel Mikhailenko, Oleg Klimenko and Alexei Sechkin, and the group changes its name to Different People. The group's repertoire consists mainly of songs by Alexander Chernetsky and Pavel Mikhailenko.

After a while, due to the deteriorating health of Alexander Chernetsky, the group begins to perform songs by Chigrakov, upon the return of Alexander Chernetsky, the repertoire is divided equally.

In 1991, the album "Boogie-Kharkov" was recorded, for the first time consisting entirely of Chizh's songs. The group also performs with constant concerts.

A few years later, Chizh left the “Different People” group. In addition to disagreements in the group, the reason for leaving was the offer from Igor Berezovets and Andrey Burlaka to record their own disc. And in 1993, already in St. Petersburg, Chizh, with the support of Boris Grebenshchikov, recorded the first solo album called simply "Chizh", which was released on vinyl under the OsoAviAkhim label. Since at that time Chizh did not have a group, famous Petersburg musicians helped him in the recording: BG, N. Korzinin (St. Petersburg), A. Brovko (DDT), Mikhail Chernov (DDT) and others. The sound engineer of this recording was the legendary St. Petersburg musician and sound engineer Yuri Morozov.

Inspired by the reaction of the St. Petersburg public, Chizh finally decided to move, and on May 1, 1994 he moved to St. Petersburg. A month later, he had already assembled the permanent group Chizh & Co. The following version was invented for journalists. The recruitment to the Chizh & Co group was carried out in a non-standard way: Sergei Chigrakov sent out a bunch of advertisements to all places where they were taken, including the magazines "Young Naturalist" and "Tekhnika - Youth".

In 1996, to record a video for the song "Polonaise" Chigrakov together with the group went to America. In addition, this year was marked by various solo projects of the band members. Chizh took part in the recording of two albums "Mitkovskie songs", along with such famous performers as: BG, Yuri Shevchuk, Vyacheslav Butusov, Alexander F. After a three-year silence, in 2001 Chizh's solo disc "Haydn will be" was released, where he sang and played all the instruments, without involving producers and other musicians. The sound engineer, according to tradition, was Yuri Morozov. In the same year, Chij turned 40 years old.

In June 2004, Sergei Chigrakov once again crossed the Atlantic in order to realize his old dream - to play with black blues musicians. The joint project of Chizh and Herbert Maitlandt Band was called the Chizh & Blues company. The repertoire consisted of Chizhov's blues. The result of joint music making were concerts in Boston and the legendary "China Club" in New York.
