She was born on December 31, 1970 in Odessa.
She studied under N. Kurgapkina at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Leningrad. She also studied with Shmyrova, Serebrennikov, Gensler and Yananis. During her studies at school she toured throughout Europe, including France, Holland and Germany.
In 1990, Ponomarenko was a finalist of the international competition in Jackson. (Mississippi, USA), and in 1994 she participated in the same competition as a partner of the contestant.
Larisa Ponomarenko was the leading ballet dancer of the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theater in Ukraine, and has toured with the troupe in the United States and Russia. She was invited as a soloist with Tulsa Ballet and Mississippi Ballet.
In 1993 she joined the Boston Ballet as the first soloist.
