Daughter of the Honored Artist of the RSFSR Pavla Leontievna Wulf.
She graduated from school at the Moscow Art Theater, where she studied with Stanislavsky and Telesheva. She began her career in 1925 at the Moscow Art Theater as an actress, then became an assistant director. In 1934 she moved to the Studio Theater under the direction of Yuri Alexandrovich Zavadsky, then in 1936-1938 she worked at the Rostov Theater, where she made her debut as a director with the production of Restless Old Age.
In 1946 she became the director of the Mossovet Theater.
Since 1939 she taught at GITIS. Member of the CPSU since 1956.
Died suddenly on May 9, 1972.
Was the wife of Yuri Zavadsky.
The son is the architect Alexey Shcheglov, the author of memoirs about Faina Ranevskaya, with whom the family of Irina Sergeevna was very friendly.
