Born June 18, 1949, Grand Rapids is a contemporary American novelist and artist, author of popular books for children and young people. He graduated from the University of Michigan Art School and a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. Later he was fond of drawing, and in his works one could feel the plasticity inherent in the sculptor. On the advice of his wife, Van Allsburg also begins to successfully illustrate the books he wrote. Depending on which of his "stories" he illustrates, Van Allsburg's drawings are black and white (in Jumanji) or colored (in the Polar Express) .
The writer's books describe fantastic impossible worlds and are seasoned with a fair amount of irony. He "falls out" from the ordinary world of children's literature, trying to show and analyze the dark sides of human nature. So, in his novel, The Dearest Coward, he tells about one narcissistic person who received the gift of fulfilling desires, and who fell victim to his own greed. Considering that such a moral picture is common for children's novels, the book still clearly stands out in the book a sober, cold and adult assessment of the personality of the protagonist, rare in literature of this kind. Another interesting piece is the Merciful Stone, which tells about the crew of an ocean ship, hypnotized and corrupted by a certain stone. The Merciful Stone is an allegorical story about the pernicious role of mass culture and, above all, television, in modern society. Chris Van Allsburg was awarded the Caldecott Medal of Honor in 1980 for his book Sad Abdul Gasazi. In 1982 he was awarded the Caldecott Gold Medal for his novel Jumanji; in 1985, he received the second such award - for the novel The Polar Express. Both of the latter served as the basis for Hollywood movies. Chris Van Allsburg's family currently lives in Providence (Rhode Island). Converted to Judaism.
