Born December 30, 1945 - American director, producer, screenwriter, actor, composer. One of the founders of the independent film studio Troma.
He is married to actress Patricia Kaufman and has 3 children. His brother is writer and director Charles Kaufman (not to be confused with director and writer Charlie Kaufman). He attended Trinity School, graduating in 1964. After graduation, he entered the prestigious Yale University. It was here that Lloyd met his future colleague Michael Hertz. In 1966 he left for Africa as a peacekeeper, where he taught and conducted a number of studies in a small village in Chad. It was there that Lloyd shot his first short film, which captures a fifteen-minute scene of a pig being slaughtered by local residents. He soon showed this film to his family members, who were shocked by watching the tape. The family's reaction to the footage finally pushed Lloyd to make the decision to devote himself entirely to cinema. Then he realized that it was precisely films of such a plan that they could enter the audience into a stupor, and, accordingly, not let go until the very end. In the early 70s, he organized 15th Street Films with Oliver Stone and Frank Vital. Stone soon began directing his own films and Kaufman invited his former Yale classmate Michael Hertz to shoot Ha-Balash Ha'Amitz Shvartz, suggesting that the film would be interesting for the viewer. The picture did not live up to the hopes placed on it and failed at the box office, causing losses in thousands of dollars. At one time he worked at the studio "Cannon Pictures". However, the collaboration with the studio did not last long. “There were constant problems. I always wanted to do it my own way, and my superiors demanded to do it like everyone else! " - recalled Kaufman.
In 1974, Kaufman and Herz created the Troma studio.
