His 1989 book A Year in Provence became an international bestseller. It describes the author's year as a British expatriate in Menerbe, a village in the southern department of Vaucluse. Peter Mayle's books have been translated into over twenty languages. He also wrote articles for magazines and newspapers.
Peter Mail lived in Lourmarin, located in the Luberon in Provence, France.
The Year in Provence was named Best Travel Book of 1989 by the British National Book Awards, and Peter Mail was named Best Author of 1992. Since 2002 Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
