His father - pianist and composer Eduard Grigorievich Hesselberg (1870-1935), a student of Anton Rubinstein - was a Jewish emigrant from Riga (then the Livonian province); mother, Lina Priscila (Lena Priscilla) Sheckelford (1868-1961) - a native of Tennessee, daughter of the infantry general George Tallafero Sheckelford (1837-1942).
