Born March 20, 1966, Berkeley, California, USA - American film director, screenwriter, music video maker and graphic designer. Educated at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York College of Art. His mother died of a brain tumor in 1999. A week after her death, Mike's father came out at 75 years old, having lived with his wife for 44 years. Five years later, he died of lung cancer.
Mike Mills has created music videos for many musicians, including Moby and Yoko Ono. In his honor, the group Air named the fifth song of their album Talkie Walkie.
He has also worked as a designer on advertisements and album covers for the Beastie Boys, Beck Hansen, Sonic Youth and Ol 'Dirty Bastard. In addition, he created graphics for X-Girl and Marc Jacobs, and currently produces his own line of posters and posters under the general title Humans by Mike Mills.
Mills was the guitarist and backing vocalist for the short lived indie rock band Butter 08, where he played alongside Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, Russell Simins of Blues Explosion and Rick Lee of Skeleton Key. The group released an album in 1996, which was named by its own name.
His directorial debut, Bad Habit, was released in 2005, for which Mills also made posters. His second film, Beginners, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2010.
He has published some of his photographic work in Gas Book 11 (2003) and Humans (2006). In 2009, the popular Berlin culture magazine 032c dedicated one of its issues to him. On this occasion, Mills gave an interview to Nick Curry, better known as Momus, which in the magazine was titled Getting Through the New Depression (Passage through a new depression).
