After high school, he attended City College of New York. Carried away by producing, he decided to quit college and get a job. Russell got his first experience as a producer with Curtis Blow, as well as with his brother Joseph's band Run-DMC.
In 1984, Simmons met Rick Rubin, with whom he later released albums for the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Public Enemy and others, on his own label Def Jam Recordings.
